Nets For Life
11/29/2008
Here's an example of the type of nets that Nets For Life uses to fight malaria in Africa.
As part of our parish's commitment to the larger Church's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to eradicate worldwide poverty we have designated our 2008 MDG funds to the purchase of mosquito nets such as the one pictured above through the Nets For Life project. Nets For Life is a three year program designed to help control and prevent malaria in sub-Saharan Africa by providing mosquito netting for those most at risk of this devastating disease.
In parts of Africa where malaria is endemic, 3,000 children die every day and millions are left weak and disabled for life. Nets For Life is currently active in eight countries but is working with local Anglican churches and ecumenical organizations in a total of fifteen including Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya and Zambia to name a few. The goal is to expand to eighteen countries by 2009.
In Burundi for example Nets For Life is working with the six diocesan Bishops of The Eglise Anglicane du Burundi. They have enlisted the assistance of the director of the national malaria control program along with health care directors from each targeted district. Nets for Life operates in the northern highlands regions of Burundi where drought and food shortages have contributed to the increase of malaria. Trainings have been held in each of the targeted dioceses and participants included clergy, lay church leaders, medical personnel, and grassroots mobilizers.
During our St. Luke's Day celebration (October 12th) we raised almost $700 of additional funds to add to the $3,700 already committed from our parish budget.
