Thankgiving Food Drive
11/22/2009
On the three Sundays preceding Thanksgiving Day we've been collecting nonperishable food items to benefit the food bank at the Mazzoni Center, 1201 Chestnut Street.
The Mazzoni Center, formerly Philadelphia Community Health Alternatives, is best known for providing primary medical and HIV/AIDS case management health services to the sexual minority and HIV/AIDS affected community. However, the center also sponsors a food bank that serves over 700 low-income clients a month, many families with children affected by HIV/AIDS.
Ninety percent of the food bank's clients are living at or below the federal poverty level, approximately 35% of the households served have a single female head, and 25% of the total clients are children. Contributions to the food bank are always in short supply at Thanksgiving time, as clients seek to provide a holiday meal for their families.
Contributions will be brought to the altar during the Offertory today.
